Muruve Winery: Tradition and Excellence in D.O. Toro

Updated: Feb 14

Introduction to Muruve Winery

As part of Bodegas Frutos Villar, Muruve Winery embodies a perfect balance between tradition and innovation. Situated in the historic D.O. Toro, a region with winemaking roots dating back to pre-Roman times, Muruve is dedicated to crafting bold, expressive wines that honor the land’s centuries-old legacy.

Established as the first commercial winery in Toro in 1920, Muruve Winery has been a pioneer in producing high-quality, authentic Toro wines. Today, with a deep respect for both heritage and modern viticulture, we continue to cultivate 94 hectares of vineyards, producing wines that capture the power, structure, and elegance that define D.O. Toro.

The History of Muruve Winery

Our journey began in the early 20th century when the Frutos Villar family recognized the immense potential of the Toro wine region. With a firm commitment to quality, we became the first established winery to commercialize Toro wines, laying the foundation for a tradition that still thrives today.

Over the years, Muruve Winery has played a crucial role in the development of D.O. Toro, an appellation officially recognized in 1987 but known for its wines’ reputation since the Middle Ages, when they were granted royal privileges for exclusive trade in cities where other wines were restricted. This historical significance continues to be reflected in every bottle of Muruve wine.

D.O. Toro: A Land of Legendary Wines

Winemaking in Toro predates the Roman conquest of Spain, making it one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious wine regions. The unique terroir and climate conditions contribute to the intensity, complexity, and longevity of Toro wines.

D.O. Toro encompasses the province of Zamora, with a landscape defined by:

  • A continental climate with extreme temperature variations

  • Low annual rainfall, ensuring concentrated, deeply flavored grapes

  • Sandy and gravelly soils, providing excellent drainage and structure

  • Abundant sunshine, leading to full ripeness and bold character

The Unique Terroir of Muruve

At Muruve Winery, our vineyards thrive in an exceptional terroir that enhances the richness and depth of our wines. Our Tempranillo (Tinta de Toro) vines, many of which are centuries old, yield small, intensely flavored grapes that define the power of Toro wines.

🌿 Key Soil Types:

  • Gravel and sand: Improves drainage, enhancing concentration and complexity

  • Clay-limestone: Adds minerality and depth to the wines

  • Alluvial deposits: Contribute to structure and aging potential
