As part of Bodegas Frutos Villar, Winery Calderona represents a seamless blend of tradition and innovation. Since the 1960s, our family has been dedicated to crafting fresh, aromatic wines in the heart of D.O. Cigales, a region known for its deep-rooted winemaking history dating back to the 10th century.

With 105 hectares of meticulously cultivated Tempranillo vineyards, Calderona has become a hallmark of quality and excellence in the region. Our wines—Calderona and Conde Ansúrez—continue to place Frutos Villar at the forefront of D.O. Cigales, a distinction earned through generations of hard work and a relentless pursuit of perfection.

The History of Winery Calderona

In the early 1960s, the Frutos Villar family expanded its winemaking tradition by establishing a second winery in Cigales, Valladolid. With a vision of renewal and progress, they recognized the potential of this historic Designation of Origin (D.O.) to produce wines of remarkable character and balance.

Over the years, we have consistently invested in our vineyards—now spanning 99 hectares—and incorporated cutting-edge technology to enhance our production processes. This harmonious blend of tradition and innovation ensures that every bottle of Calderona reflects the rich heritage and exceptional terroir of Cigales.

D.O. Cigales: A Unique Winemaking Region

Although D.O. Cigales was officially recognized in 1991, the region’s winemaking history dates back centuries. By 1888, it was already producing over 15 million kilos of grapes annually, demonstrating its longstanding tradition of viticulture.

Today, D.O. Cigales spans from Pago “El Berrocal” in Valladolid to the town of Dueñas in Palencia, covering areas such as Cabezón de Pisuerga, Cigales, Corcos del Valle, Cubillas de Santa Marta, Fuensaldaña, Mucientes, Quintanilla de Trigueros, San Martín de Valvení, Trigueros del Valle, and Valoria la Buena. This diverse landscape provides ideal conditions for growing high-quality grapes.

The Unique Terroir of Calderona

The vineyards of Calderona thrive in diverse soil compositions, including:

Clay-rich soils, which provide structure and richness
Limestone deposits, enhancing minerality and freshness
Gravel and sandy soils, improving drainage and root development
